Edward VII and the Doctor

Edward VII and the Doctor

The date is February  1909. Edward has returned from Berlin where he briefly lost consciousness. His advisors want him to have a health MOT in the hope that it will scare him into being healthier.

The Facts

The names of the Doctors mentioned are all real and served Edward at various points in his life. He did smoke, drink and have a poor diet - all the foods mentioned are what he actually ate. He liked to eat without chewing. He did always leave the last button of his waistcoat undone. The waist measurements are all accurate.

All the illnesses, accidents and diseases mentioned are all accurate. He did get delirious and insisted all gentlemen wear tights. He really did wrestle with the surgeons once given laughing gas. Laking really did stare at him until he saw a doctor about his condition. Treves really did say that if he went to the Abbey, he would die at his Coronation.

His nickname really was Tum Tum. And there are several dishes named after him, created by world famous chefs. He did quit his membership of White's Club because smoking was banned in the Drawing Room. He did raise a lot of money for medical advancements and charities and held a few positions of authority. The quote about not giving in is verbatim. The sex chair is below in picture three. Yikes!
