George II and the Memorabilia Collector

George II and the Memorabilia Collector

The date is Winter 1759. George is having a good year. British forces have captured Quebec and French invasion plans for Britain and Hanover have been thwarted. Buoyed by this, George wonders how much his memorabilia is now worth.

The Facts

George was a bit obsessed with military memorabilia. He really was an Archtreasurer. Whatever that is. He may not have owned all the items but they were all connected with either him or his reign such as the Battle of Oudenarde where his horse was killed. Marlborough did say that he distinguished himself extremely.

He did go along to the fire at Tyers' Spring Gardens in Vauxhall when it was on fire and he was Governor of the South Sea Company. A gunman did try and kill him at the theatre. Handel did write music for his Coronation. The Gin Act was brought in under his reign, not that it worked that well. Admiral Byng is real as was his death by firing squad.

Amazing as it sounds, there really was a War of Jenkins Ear as described. He was indeed the last Monarch to lead troops into battle. The Bonnie Prince Charlie memorabilia was all really produced. He did donate all his books to the British Museum. The satirical notice was real and verbatim. The late King's will really did mysteriously vanish. Fortnam and Mason was created during his reign and he really did love drinking chocolate.

There was no love lost between him and his son and when he died, he really did say he was glad of it. Captain Bodkin did indeed write a comedy script that only performed one show. Rule Britannia was also created during his reign. He really did say that not a drop of his blood was not English.
