George III and the Washington Handover

George III and the Washington Handover

The date is May 1789. George Washington is the first President of the United States after the War of Independence that took it from British rule. King George offers to provide a hand over.

The Facts

Buckingham House, latterly Buckingham Palace, was patronised by George (see picture 3 below). His Father did create a Manual on Kingship for him. The quote about being the last to consent is verbatim. The references to the contents of the Constitution are obviously true but it was supposed to be based on the Magna Carta principles. The Civil War over slavery is obviously true.

Mexico was known as New Spain at that point but the reference to the wall is a modern invention. Thanksgiving as a public holiday in November is obviously real. The references to the Boston Tea Party and the reasons for tax collection and rebellion are all true. Turkeys are indeed an American species. He did repeal the Stamp Act and they did erect a statue of him in New York City. The 27 reasons refers to the list of complaints that they had over independence from Britain. He did suffer from black moods and depression as well as being thought 'mad'.

He really did love agriculture and was known as Farmer George. All the references to George Washington are true. Including his quote about being like a culprit going to an execution. And his promotion within the New Continental Army. His inaugural speech did contain all of the suggestions from King George. The US really does stay sitting when the President speaks and this was the time when the spelling of certain words changed between the US and UK spelling. Washington also started the use of Mr President as the title of office. Needless to say, they went with the stars and stripes motif.
