Henry VII and the Customs Officer

Henry VII and the Customs Officer

The date is May 1505. Henry is considering a new wife and is off to Naples to visit the widowed Queen, Joan. He is about to board his ship when he is asked to step to one side.

The Facts

Henry was an advocate of international trade. He also loved his relics! He was interested in Queen Joan as a potential partner. The restrictions and Acts are all accurate and brought in by Henry. He also created his own Yeoman of the Guard as his personal bodyguards as well as his musicians. There were two pretenders to the throne that Henry saw off successfully and with a lot of grace. But one really was hidden in a barrel of wine. He really did have a lovely oak marriage bed but I doubt he took it with him on trips.

He did own St George's leg bone and a piece of the holy cross from Greece. As well as a serpent's tongue on a chain. Portsmouth was Europe's first dry dock and he did design the Tudor Rose (see picture 2 below). He did regulate working hours and meal breaks for the benefit of workers. Morton's Fork is mentioned (where there are two good reasons to do something) and the shilling was a coin introduced in his reign. He also wrote things down in his notebook.
