Margaret Tudor and the Divorce Lawyer

Margaret Tudor and the Divorce Lawyer

The date is February 1537. King Henry VIII is on the throne.
Margaret is on her third husband. She wants a divorce because it’s becoming clear that she has terrible taste in men.

The Facts

It's true that Margaret was married three times. She was just 7 when her Father prepared her to marriage to James, the King of Scotland. All the details about the wedding and their marriage are true. Whilst he was not faithful to her, he was a pretty good husband (when you compare him to her other two!) She really did beg him not to go into battle as she had dreamt of his death.

Her second husband really was a member of James' council and they did not like the fact that she married him as she broke the rules of James' will. She did have to give guardianship of her sons over to the Council. She did flee to England as described but Archie did betray her and stayed in Scotland. Henry, her brother, really did refuse her divorce. Double standards when he was trying to divorce his first wife, Catherine. And Angus did smooze Henry and got on his side. She did fire the guns of Edinburgh Castle towards him and missed but did kill four innocent citizens. Archie really did then virtually kidnap her son and refused to give him back.

Her third husband was very like her second. He was also unfaithful to her and diverted her money. She did fall out with her son because of her marriages. Frankly, this woman needs a Netflix mini-series written about her life.
