Queen Elizabeth of York and the Equality Lawyer

Queen Elizabeth of York and the Equality Lawyer

The date is December 1487.
Elizabeth has finally held her Coronation after a long delay.
She now needs to set up her own household as Queen to King Henry VII but just wants to check something first.

The Facts

It's true that Queens did have their own household which was run separately. But she wasn't allowed to appoint them and they weren't answerable to her either. Elizabeth did have 32 ladies in waiting as opposed to her mother who only had 5. She was indeed the first uncrowned Queen to give birth since 1066. She had to wait two years after she married Henry to have her coronation (see image 4).

Noble women were indeed taught how to run a household and essentially manage everything. And technically she was next in line to the throne after the disappearance of her two brothers from the Tower. But because she was a woman, she couldnt take the throne. The houses of Plantagent and Tudor do indeed claim their thrones through the female line but women can't rule themselves. And it's true that we dont have salic law in England that stops a woman taking the throne so it was pure discrimination.

Henry did have his coronation before they were married even though he was marrying her to strengthen his claim to the throne. And poor Elizabeth wasn't even invited to the ceremony or mentioned! He did buy her Miroir des Dames which was a handbook for Queens in how to behave. There is no male equivalent for Kings. Obviously.

Elizabeth did get Henry to buy her a lion as a gift which he did. And she did like greyhounds. It's true that queens, unlike other married women, were able to have legal actions in their own right, independant of the King. Image 2 is a wooden model of Elizabeth for her funeral effigy.
