William IV and the Pension

William IV and the Pension

The date is July 1830. William has come to the throne at the age of 64. He is trying to claim his pension from the Navy. Someone from the Government has come to assess if he's actually entitled to it.

The Facts

The session is littered throughout with naval sayings that have worked their way into our national language. All the dates, ships and locations are part of his real naval career. As well as all the stories and the tales of him being drunk.

There is some real concern that he said he was at sea when he wasn't and that his certificates were forged. His favourite saying was 'I see some of God Almighty's daylight in that case, banish it!' He did a significant amount of damage to a brothel in Barbados and they did name a street there after him! You will notice there are a LOT of public houses named after him, one of which is in picture 2 below.

He really did have a long term relationship with the actress Dora Jordan and had ten children together before he married Adelaide (who the city in Australia is named after). He didn't get on with the Duke of Wellington. He was notoriously skint.
